As a result of prolonged exposure to moisture, the cob had developed visible cracking, necessitating structural intervention. To stabilise the affected area, Helifix stitching was employed. This method is commonly used to reinforce traditional buildings where movement or cracking has occurred, offering a sympathetic solution that preserves the historic fabric while providing essential structural support.

Despite the deterioration, the wall was in relatively sound condition overall, aside from the areas where cracking was present. Once the structural repairs were completed, attention was turned to reapplying a traditional lime plaster finish. A three-coat lime plaster system was applied using St. Astier’s NHL 2, a natural hydraulic lime suitable for heritage works, particularly where a softer and more breathable finish is required.

The three-coat system included a scratch coat, a floating coat, and a final finishing coat, each applied with careful consideration to breathability and compatibility with the cob substrate. This approach helps ensure moisture is not trapped within the wall, which is crucial for the long-term preservation of historic buildings constructed from cob and lime.

The completed works reflect a balance between conservation and modern intervention, maintaining the traditional appearance while ensuring the building’s ongoing structural stability.
